Liga Nacional Honduras
Liga Nacional Honduras is the most important professional soccer tournament in Honduras, organized by the National Professional Soccer League of Honduras and sponsored by various partners. Founded on May 10, 1964, the league's inaugural tournament took place in 1965 with the participation of 10 clubs. The first champion was Club Deportivo Platense, while the current champions are Olimpia.
From theseason to, the Liga Nacional held one tournament per year. Since then, the competition format has changed, resulting in two tournaments per year, known as Apertura and Clausura, with varying formats over the years.
The majority of titles in the Liga Nacional Honduras are won by the "big teams" including Olimpia, Motagua, Real España, and Marathón. The Olimpia vs Motagua match, known as the super classic of the Liga Salva Vida, is a highly anticipated event. These successful clubs have represented Honduras internationally on numerous occasions. Olimpia, in particular, is the most successful club in the league, having won two CONCACAF titles and qualifying for the Club World Cup.
